The Institute of the Humanities & Global Cultures (IHGC) is pleased to support a series of Humanities Labs, which are conceived as two-year term spaces for collaborative, interdisciplinary and experimental work in the global humanities. Labs are organized around a central research theme, are led by one or more tenured faculty members in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, and typically consist of a mix of UVA faculty, academic staff, and graduate students. Labs will generate innovative forms of advanced research and pedagogical practice, while fostering opportunities for engagement beyond departmental boundaries. Labs should aim to foster collaborative engagement with other institutions, both nationally and internationally, and may lead to grant applications to sustain the work of the lab beyond their two-year term with the IHGC.
Approved proposals come with up to $30,000 in programming funding over the course of two academic years in addition to $2,500 in research funding per year for the lab leader(s). Calls for proposals are generally announced in late January with a deadline in early spring. Details on how to apply, including the proposal format and selection criteria can be found on the Funding page. Please contact IHGC Director Jack W. Chen (jwchen@virginia.edu) if you have questions about the Humanities Lab program.
