Winter School 2026
The Institute of the Humanities and Global Cultures (IHGC) is pleased to share that, with generous support from the Office of the Provost, it will continue its participation in Winter School. The theme of Winter School 2026 is Liminalities: Thinking, Thresholds and will take place July 6 – July 10 in Cape Town, South Africa.
IHGC welcomes applications from graduate students who have attained doctoral candidacy and tenured/tenure-track faculty in the College of Arts & Sciences. Those chosen to be Winter School fellows will be expected to participate in all Winter School events and sessions. IHGC will arrange for and cover economy-class air travel to/from Cape Town, as well as accommodations during the Winter School.
Eligible graduate students and faculty members are invited to submit an application to IHGC by Friday, March 6, 2026. See the Call for Proposals with full details on eligibility and the application process below. Access the Graduate Student Application here and the Faculty Application here.
IHGC also invites prospective candidates to attend a virtual information session on Wednesday, February 11th at 1pm. Register for the information session and receive an automated email with the information on how to join the meeting.
Digital Humanities Summer Institute Funding
As sponsors of the 2026 Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI), The Digital Humanities Center and the Digital Humanities Initiative are pleased to cover the registration fee for up to 5 eligible individuals! Those interested in applying for this funding should submit an application by Friday, February 13th. All those with a strong interest in the Digital Humanities are welcome to apply. Although the institute is designed with graduate students and professionals in mind, undergraduate students may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Undergraduate students interested in this opportunity must contact and meet with DHI Director Rennie Mapp (rcm7e@virginia.edu) to receive pre-approval before applying.
The selection committee hopes to notify applicants of their status during the week of February 23rd. The selection committee will prioritize students, who have limited access to professional development funds. However, early career researchers, and faculty/staff practitioners may apply and be considered on a case-by-case basis. Faculty and staff are encouraged to consider using professional development funding and use the discount code offered through DHSI.
As a sponsor of DHSI, we are also able to offer an unlimited number of discounts to anyone wishing to attend who does not secure full funding via this application process. Please be advised that early bird rates for registration end February 28, 2026. More information on the discount code will be shared as it becomes available.
IHGC Sponsorship Requests
The Institute for the Humanities and Global Cultures (IHGC) is pleased to support UVA events that align with IHGC's mission to support humanistic and interdisciplinary inquiry, as funds are available. University departments/units may request up to $500 for a single event/program per academic year. In order to be eligible for IHGC Sponsorship, the following criteria must be met:
- The event must be hosted by a UVA department, center, or unit
- The event must be open to all UVA community members (the event cannot be closed to certain majors, for example)
- The event should align with the IHGC mission to advance humanistic research and inquiry across the disciplines
- The hosts agree to acknowledge IHGC as a sponsor in any promotional materials, flyers, programs, etc., using the IHGC logo provided in the award email
- The request must be submitted with approval from the hosting department/center/unit Chair/Director, as only one request can be made per academic year
Although IHGC strongly encourages requests to be submitted prior to the start of the academic year or the relevant semester, submissions will be reviewed throughout the year, while funds remain. For rolling submissions, requests will be reviewed on the first Monday of each month of the academic year with plans to notify the requestor within 2 weeks. Complete the IHGC Sponsorship Request Form here.
For questions or special requests, please contact Dr. Meg Homer.
