Faculty Fellows Program

The Institute of the Humanities & Global Cultures (IHGC) invites applications for two IHGC Fellowships for academic years 2024–26. The IHGC Fellows Program is open to tenure-track faculty in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences who work in any discipline and/or field of the humanities and interpretive social sciences.

Fellows will receive one course release to be taken after Fall 2024. They will be expected to attend and participate in IHGC lectures and events as actively engaged members of the IHGC community. Each Fellow will also receive $2,500 per year in research funding.

APPLICATION FORMAT
Applications should be submitted as single pdf file and include:

  1. One- to two-page statement on activities to be undertaken during the fellowship;

  2. Statement identifying current IHGC initiatives to which the fellow will contribute;

  3. Abbreviated CV (maximum 10 pages);

  4. Names and contact information of two referees;

  5. Written approval from the Chair of relevant department or program.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Fellowship applications will be selected based on:

  1. Quality of the research proposal;

  2. Track record of the applicant;

  3. Potential for program innovation and community building;

Humanities Labs

The Institute of the Humanities & Global Cultures (IHGC) invites proposals for one Humanities Lab starting in Fall 2024 and running through Spring 2026. The call is open to tenured faculty members in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences working in any discipline and/or field of the humanities and interpretive social sciences. One lab, to be based at IHGC, will be funded for a maximum of $30,000 to support programming for up to two years (2024–2026). A lab may be proposed by either a single tenured faculty member or two tenured faculty members. Each lab leader will receive research funds of $2,500 per year, to be made available at the start of Fall 2024. Existing labs and research networks are not eligible.

Humanities Labs are conceived as spaces for collaborative, interdisciplinary and experimental work in the global humanities. The proposed Lab will generate new experiential forms of advanced research and pedagogical practice, while fostering opportunities for engagement beyond departmental boundaries. Led by a tenured faculty member, the Lab should bring together early career researchers, graduate students, faculty, and academic staff (librarians, curators, and technologists) and serve as a critical space for intellectual community at UVA. Labs should aim to foster collaborative engagement with other institutions, nationally and/or internationally, and may lead to grant applications to sustain the work of the lab beyond the initial two-year term.

Proposals for the lab should be organized around an overarching research theme and outline a vision and plan of activities over two years. Under the aegis of the lab, a constellation of research projects and ideas for curriculum innovation led by the lab leader(s) will organize a team of faculty, academic staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students. The lab might experiment with newly emerging theoretical questions, research methods, scholarly fields, and models of public engagement. Collaborative work could include workshops, invited lectures, seminars, exhibitions, performances, podcasts, and community-focused initiatives. Each lab should have a minimum of eight core participants, though labs may be either open or closed in terms of structure according to each lab’s preferences. The participants will work in designated IHGC lab spaces.

PROPOSAL FORMAT

The successful proposal will be funded an initial $15,000 for the first year. An additional $15,000 for the second year will be made available following a report of activities for the first year and the approval of the IHGC Board. This amount may be used to cover regular scholarly expenses such as meals for meetings, subventions for publication, and workshop and invited lecturer costs (e.g. travel, hotel, honoraria, and meals related to the event). Lab leaders are encouraged to supplement their award with funding from other sources (e.g. CGII, Dean’s Office, and Page-Barbour).

Proposals should include:

  1. One page description of the proposed theme and its conceptual/interdisciplinary parameters, including key research questions and identification of areas of curricular development;

  2. Proposed core membership of the lab (minimum of 8), with a reasonable mix of faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students;

  3. Plan for research collaboration and programming over two years, including meetings, symposia, workshops, and conferences, broken down by year;

  1. Statement indicating approval from the Chair or Chairs of the lab leader(s) department(s) of record;

  2. Abbreviated CV(s) of the lab leader(s);

  3. Proposed budget for two years, broken down by year.

Proposals will be assessed based on:

  1. Originality, creativity, and overall quality of the proposal;

  2. Scale of interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary research engagement;

  3. Potential for curricular innovation;

  4. Quality and range of the programming proposed;

  5. Track record of lab leader(s), including the ability to lead collaborative projects;

  6. Viability of the program in relation to the budget.

Sponsored Groups

The Institute of the Humanities & Global Cultures (IHGC) invites proposals for sponsored groups on a smaller scale than the Humanities Lab model, starting Fall 2024. The call is open to all faculty and academic staff in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences working in any discipline and/or field of the humanities and interpretive social sciences. Existing working groups are eligible to apply. The maximum award for a sponsored group will be $5,000 for one year with the possibility of renewal for one more year. The funding might support an invited lecture, books, and food and nonalcoholic drinks for working sessions.

Proposals for sponsored groups should be organized around an overarching theme and outline a vision and plan of activities for one year. Sponsored groups may take the form of seminars, reading groups, manuscript workshops, or other activities. Each sponsored group should have a minimum of five or six core participants, who will work in designated IHGC lab spaces. Preference will be given to proposals that include academic staff and graduate students. Group leaders are encouraged to supplement their award with funding from other sources (e.g. CGII, Dean’s Office, and Page- Barbour).
