We are witnessing a shift where digital archives are no longer just repositories of the past, but active sites of ongoing social conflict. How do researchers navigate the “toxic” data of the manosphere, gaming cultures, and AI-driven harassment?

As part of UVA’s Responsible Conduct of Research pilot program, we invite you to a lecture by Dr. Todd Suomela (Bucknell University). Suomela's approach to research ethics prioritizes human relationships, digital consent, and the well-being of the researcher in dealing with sensitive and hostile online environments. Join us as we move beyond “what we can collect” to “how we should care” for the communities we study.
Immediately, the next day of the lecture, on Friday, April 24, Dr. Suomela to move from critical theory to hands-on application. Knowing why we must be ethical is the first step; the workshop teaches you how to build an ethical technical workflow.
This event is sponsored by Digital Humanities.
